Character Development 2

Using the hat you selected, decide who will be wearing it and answer the following questions. The person you choose doesn't have to be the person in the picture, nor does he/she have to be a person. It could be an animal, a sea creature, an alien, a fantasy land creature such as a fairy or elf.


  • Where is he/she going?
  • Why?
  • What sort of mood is he/she in?
  • This person will be your character.
  • Whole worlds can be created.
  • The more you love a character, the more your reader will relate to him/her; the more quirky traits you can give him/her, the better.
  • Write a description about your character.
  • Tell where he/she is going giving the reason.
  • Tell how he/she is feeling.

Introduction

“We want the children to write stories, and yet we don’t write ourselves.” I made this comment at a staff meeting when I was teaching at Daramalun Catholic Boys School in Canberra. The answer from the principal was, “That means that Judith wants to write.” I did not begin writing then. I had scribbled a little bit when I was travelling overseas. At different times I jotted a few things down, but nothing serious. I even began a novel, and that’s where it stayed – at the beginning. I really got going when I joined the Samford Writers’ Group in 2014. We wrote to a different theme/topic/genre each month. We met the first Thursday of the month and reviewed each other’s work.
